My Own Home. An Interior Designer's Apartment.

Curious to see inside an interior designer's home? Usually it works the other way round and I am the one arriving at a client's door. Today I am showing you my own apartment, and the interior a designer chose for herself.

A renovation with no project, in record time

I did not make a project for myself. There was simply no time to deliberate, we had to move in a hurry. A building crew was found in record time and work started immediately.

One important point ☝🏻 the layout was changed while the building was still going up, built to my drawings and entered into the building's own plans.

I drew the electrical runs straight onto the walls, to a standard scheme, because nobody knew yet what the furniture would be.

Stylistically I wanted everything at once, which was unbearable, so I decided to build the base like a blank sheet that any furniture could fit into. Why I value a solid, timeless base in my clients' interiors too is something I explain in "How I Work".

Every finishing material was bought from stock, and if the tiler had not gone on a long bender the renovation would have finished sooner. Incidentally, that is a neat illustration of why I usually advise against renovating while the project is still being drawn.

And then the classic situation: the money ran out before the furniture, so the temporary IKEA pieces are no longer quite so temporary.

But hope for an update has not died 🤪 and a start has been made: the children's room is first in line for a refresh.

So that is how we live. It is a useful reminder of how much an interior that ages beautifully alongside a family is worth.
